If you suffer from chronic headaches or migraines, the solution might be in your neck. Many headaches are actually caused by problems in the cervical spine.
The top three vertebrae of your spine (the cervical spine) connect directly to the base of your skull. Misalignments, muscle tension, or joint dysfunction in this area can refer pain to your head, causing headaches that feel like migraines or tension headaches.
These headaches originate from neck structures. Pain typically starts in the neck and radiates to the forehead, temples, or behind the eyes. Movement of the neck often worsens the pain.
Often caused by muscle tension in the neck and upper shoulders, these headaches create a constant band-like pressure around the head. Poor posture and stress contribute to this type.
Some migraines are triggered by neck issues. The trigeminocervical nucleus (a nerve connection between the neck and face) can be irritated by cervical dysfunction, triggering migraine symptoms.
Consider chiropractic evaluation if your headaches are frequent (more than once a week), if they started after a head or neck injury, if over-the-counter pain relievers aren't helping, or if headaches are affecting your daily life.
